Readers will get a taste of what’s in store for the star-spangled hero in May’s Avengers/Captain America Free Comic Book Day issue, available May 5. This marks the first issue for the new creative team of Ta-Nehisi Coates and Leinil Yu.

Coates made the following statement on taking over the character and how he will approach the book.

“I think it’s a really exciting time to be writing Captain America right now. The country is in an interesting place, and I look forward to inhabiting Steve Rogers’ character – this guy who has been a sort of awkward fit for the world, out of time as people say. I hope fans are excited to see something different, and I think there are some really compelling villains old school Captain America fans and Marvel fans will be familiar with.”

Captain America will still be dealing with the aftermath of Hydra’s takeover of the U.S. Despite being cleared from the “Captain America” that built a Secret Empire, Captain America is still a figure of controversy. Along with re-establishing who he is, there’s a new force of evil coming–the Power Elite. They’ll be trying to further corrupt the symbol of Captain America.

The “Fresh Start” also means a new #1 issue for Cap. Tom Brevoort has stated that books will have dual numbering, retaining their Legacy numbers.

Captain America #1 by Ta-Nehisi Coates and Leinil Yu goes on sale July 4, 2018.
